A cam girl (or camgirl) is an adult who performs live on webcam for paying viewers: shows, conversation and content that is often erotic or sexual, streamed on camming sites or on subscription platforms such as OnlyFans. The male equivalent is cam boy; the neutral industry term is cam model.
Origin and meaning
The word combines webcam and girl, and dictionaries date it to the early 2000s, when the first live-streaming sites appeared. Two formats dominate. The public show is open to all and paid through tips, usually in tokens bought on the site. The private show is sold to one viewer, often by the minute. On OnlyFans and similar platforms, live streams sit alongside recorded content and paid messages.
What the law says
Camming between consenting adults is lawful in the United States and the United Kingdom. Producing and selling non-obscene adult content is protected activity in the US, and selling adult content between adults is lawful in the UK. The criminal law sits around the work, not in it.
Minors are an absolute line. In the US, 18 U.S.C. § 2257 requires producers of sexually explicit depictions to verify and record each performer's legal name and date of birth from identity documents, with criminal penalties for failures. Platforms run their own age and identity checks, and in the UK, services that allow pornography have had to use highly effective age assurance since 25 July 2025, as explained in age verification in the US and UK. Any sign of a minor, on camera or in the audience, means stopping and reporting.
In-person meetings change everything. Prostitution and the offences around it (pandering, promoting, controlling prostitution for gain) are aimed at paid sexual services and the people who arrange or profit from them. Consent covers the image, too. Recording or sharing someone's intimate images without consent is a criminal offence in the UK and in almost every US state.
Tax is ordinary self-employment tax. Mistakes to avoid
- Accepting a paid meeting with a fan, even once.
- Filming another person without verified ID and a signed release.
- Working for a studio that holds your logins, dictates content or withholds pay.
- Assuming platforms report nothing: US payers issue 1099 forms once reporting thresholds are met, and payment and bank records remain available to HMRC and the IRS.
